Mathematics at Whitemoor

"Confidence in numeracy and other mathematical skills is a precondition of success across the national curriculum."

The National Curriculum for Maths aims to ensure all pupils become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry conjecturing relationships and generalisations and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language

Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to routine and non routine problems, breaking them down into a series of simpler steps and persevering.

DFE Autumn2013

Maths is taught in a fun and practical way at Whitemoor Academy during daily numeracy lessons. This focuses on giving our children the confidence with numbers and measures. Children are given an understanding of the number system and are taught the skills to enable them to solve problems in a variety of contexts. They also learn how to gather information by counting and measuring and how to present such info in the form of graphs, diagrams and charts.

The areas of mathematics that we cover here at Whitemoor Academy are

Number – including the four operations and fractions

Measurement –including time and money

Geometry – including position and direction

Statistics – including interpreting data

Ratio & proportion – including solving shape problems with a scale factor

Algebra – including using simple formulae
